Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Tripos

Course Overview

Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (often abbreviated to 'AMES') is a course unique to the University.  The course is flexible, and numerous options and combinations are available. You should indicate which language(s) you’re interested in studying in your Supplementary Application Questionnaire (SAQ) – the choice isn’t absolute and some students change direction before they start or as they progress.  You can study Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese or Persian.

There is further information about the course on the University and Faculty webpages.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific subject requirements requested by the College.  The best preparation is for you to explore for yourself what interests you in the culture you choose to study.

Please note that we would ask you to submit at least one piece of recent written work (preferably marked) with your application.  Please contact the Admissions Office for a cover sheet.

At-Interview Assessment

All applicants will be asked to sit an assessment on the day they attend their interview in College.  The assessment will last no longer than an hour, and will be comparable to the pre-interview test taken by standard age applicants.  Information about the pre-interview tests for AMES, specimen papers and a specification can be found on the University AMES webpage under 'Entry Requirements'.
