Logging in to a machine in the computer room
If nobody is using a machine, a login dialog will be displayed. To log in, enter your assigned user name and password in the appropriate fields, and click OK . Each character of your password will be hidden by a special symbol, so nobody can see the password.
Your user ID is not case sensitive, so it does not matter if you type ABC20 or abc20. However, passwords are case sensitive, so 23HJK is not the same as 23hjk. If you are having problems with your password, check to make sure that Caps Lock is not on.
You will be refused access if you try to log on to a new machine while you are still logged on to another one.
Logging out
When you have finished using the machine, you should log out. To do this, go to the Apple or Start. The bottom entry in this menu is Log out.... If you select this entry from the menu then you will be logged off and the log in dialog will be displayed for the next user.
As a matter of courtesy to other users, you should log yourself out from a computer if you know you are going to be away for more than 15 minutes. Its also worth remembering that anything printed from a computer you are logged in to will be charged to you!
The College runs a file server called Graphite which you can use to store your files on.
Logging in to the file server
When you log in to a machine in the Computer Room, you should be logged in to the file server automatically. To access your files, click the Home icon at the top of any Finder window (if no windows are open, you get a new one up by double-clicking Macintosh HD on the desktop). In your home area (set aside for your personal use), you will be able to read the files you store in your private folder.
The file server is backed up several times a week, but you might want to back up very important files to a CD-R occasionally. In the extreme case of the file server breaking down it might take some time before your files become accessible again.
Keep in mind that there is a limited amount of space available on the File Server, so try to keep your usage below 500MB.
Accessing Your Files Outside College
You can access your file space on the server from anywhere on the Internet (for example if you are travelling or working somewhere else in the university), in several different ways. The details of how to do this will depend on the computer you are using at the time. This section will cover some of the basic information you will need.
From a Mac
On a Mac connected to the internet, the server address is: graphite.st-edmunds.cam.ac.uk You will be asked to enter your St Edmund's user ID and password, and will then get a list of the available file spaces.
From a PC running Windows
On a PC connected to the internet with the Windows Networking software installed, you can connect in two ways:
- In Windows Explorer go to the address bar and enter: \\graphite.st-edmunds.cam.ac.uk\Users
You will be prompted for your St Edmund's user name and password (assigned at the beginning of the year).
- Select "Run" in the Start menu, and type the following, making sure you replace [user ID] with your own (eg abc20): net use g: "\\graphite.st-edmunds.cam.ac.uk\Users\" /USER:[user ID]
To disconnect, type the command net use g: /DELETE in "Run" in the Start menu as before.
If you are connecting to the Internet with another kind of computer, if your connection is relatively slow, or if your connection is not active all the time (like when you are using a modem), there is a third alternative: downloading files using SFTP. In this case you will be copying files to and from your file space rather than working on them directly.
The best way to use SFTP is to use a proper SFTP client. There are many different SFTP programs, and it is impossible to give instructions for them all. If you have problems figuring it out you should contact someone locally to find out how to use SFTP where you are.
The SFTP address to use is: graphite.st-edmunds.cam.ac.uk, and the username and password will be the same you use when you are in college.
