The Annual Von Hügel Lecture by Cardinal Blaise Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago

POPE FRANCIS’ REVOLUTION OF MERCY: AMORIS LAETITIA AS A NEW PARADIGM OF CATHOLICITY

Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia represents a paradigm shift for the Church’s ministry. The Pope’s immediate goal is to enable a more reliable and realistic approach in deciphering the experiences of people in modern family life. Yet, these interpretive principles have much wider application as they offer an integrated way of thinking of how the Church is to take up her entire mission in a new, imaginative and creative way that links knowledge and practice in a differentiated unity.

Cardinal BLASE J. CUPICH is a native of Omaha, Nebraska, and was the personal choice of Pope Francis to succeed Francis Cardinal George as Archbishop of Chicago in September 2014. He was previously bishop of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Spokane, Washington. He is a member of the Vatican Congregations for Bishops and Catholic Education. He completed his studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington with a doctorate in sacramental theology. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals on 19 November 2016. He was a prominent voice at the 2015 Synod on the Family which informed Pope Francis’ exhortation, Amoris Laetitia.
