Education
Education Tripos: St Edmund's is pleased to welcome applications from students who wish to study Education alongside Biological Sciences, Classics, English, English with Drama, Geography, History, Modern Languages, Music, Physical Sciences (primarily Chemistry or Physics), or Religious Studies. The Education faculty teaches all Education papers while the majority of subject papers are taught by their respective faculties. The Education Tripos is a three-year combined honours course that has been designed to appeal to students who may be thinking of a wide range of careers in areas related to education (e.g. community arts, community drama, educational publishing, careers advice, etc), as well as to students who have already decided that they would like a career in teaching. The attractiveness of the course lies in its diversity and flexibility. Students have the opportunity to study the disciplines of Education (philosophy, psychology, sociology and the history of education), to develop an understanding of global and national concerns about education, to engage with fundamental questions about the aims and values of education and its relationship to society and the ability of education to promote social justice, address environmental and global concerns and economic development, while also pursuing their own specialist subject. The Degree Structure: The degree is divided into two parts. Part I covers two years. The first year involves four examination papers, two in education and two subject papers. The second year also involves five examination papers, two in education, two subject papers and one further paper which can be either an education paper or a subject paper. The third year, Part II, is taken as a set of five papers, one of which is a piece of original research and two other Education papers. The final two papers can be any combination of Education or subject papers. Further details about the Education Tripos can be found by looking at the Faculty of Education's webpage. The Faculty has built up a very sizeable group of full-time research and masters' and Ph D degree students in recent years, attracting able students from both the UK and overseas. Those wishing to undertake study alongside a professional career, may alternatively look to the Faculty's successful part-time MEd degree programme, with a part-time doctorate introduced in 2003. | ||||||||||||||||||
