St Edmund's College, Cambridge

Eligibility

We aim to offer accommodation at St Edmund's College to the following students (in no particular order):

  • PhD students for the three years of their studies
  • Undergraduate students in their first and third year of their degrees
  • Affiliated clinical students (medical & veterinary) for three years of their studies
  • Post-graduates on a one year course, and affiliated students for one year of a two year course

All new students who have placed St Edmund's College as their first choice and have finalised by 31 July are guaranteed single person accommodation. Where student demand for accommodation exceeds supply we do our best to accommodate all students who finalise before 31 August

There is a waiting list for maisonettes, flats and apartments. Priority for the maisonettes is given to couples with up to two children of pre-school age.

Whenever possible, we will also offer accommodation to postgraduate students on one-year courses.

Allocation procedure

If you are offered a place by St Edmund's, you should include in your letter of acceptance to the Admissions Tutor an indication of whether you wish to live in College, and which type of room you would prefer.

The Rooms Tutor starts allocating rooms to new students in mid-August. Please note that your accommodation will not be allocated until your admission to the College and University has been completely finalised. In the case of postgraduate students, this requires final approval by the Board of Graduate Studies.

When your admission is completely finalised, the Rooms Tutor will write to you informing you whether or not the College can meet your accommodation request.

Coming into residence

Most College rooms are available from 1 October each year. Some courses commence in mid-September and students on these courses that have been offered a room will be able to move in at an appropriate date for them. If, in exceptional circumstances, you need to arrive slightly earlier than the date on which your room is stated as available, please contact the Accommodation Office, who will tell you if this is possible. If possible please time your arrival at the College to occur during normal office hours (8am - 5pm Monday to Friday).

The Senior Tutor will write to all new students concerning detailed arrangements for the beginning of the new academic year. When you arrive at the College there are a number of formalities that need to be completed. At the beginning of term there is a help desk situated in the CR if you have any problems.

Guests and visitors

Students are allowed a guest to stay in their room for up to 9 nights each term (for a maximum of 3 consecutive nights).

It is strictly forbidden to allow a guest overnight occupancy of any other room in the College without a previous arrangement with the College Office unless permission is given by the Senior Tutor. If permission is given, a charge is made for the use of College facilities.

Students must accept full responsibility for their visitors. Domestic staff and others who in the course of their normal duties encounter a person unknown to them may enquire as to their identity; students and their visitors must comply with this request. Since space is limited, visitors may not park cars on College premises except to load or unload.

Computers

All rooms in College (with the exception of the flats and maisonettes) have Ethernet connections to the Cambridge University network, allowing access to departmental servers and the Internet. Any PC, Mac or Unix machine with an appropriate Ethernet card and software may be connected to the network. There is a connection charge for this service. More information can be obtained from the Computer Officers when you arrive at the College.

Storage of personal property

The College has limited space for storage. Members living in the College must keep all of their property in their rooms. Those members living out are not permitted to bring their property into College for storage. Members going down at the end of the academic year or leaving the College must make arrangements to remove all their property before leaving. If necessary, arrangements must be made to use commercial storage in Cambridge. Any property left at the College will be disposed of.

Cleaning

Members are responsible for keeping their rooms in a reasonable state of cleanliness and order. College cleaners are responsible for the general cleaning of rooms, but not for the making of beds. Clean bed linen is supplied weekly. Domestic staff must be allowed access to rooms to clean thoroughly at least once a week.

Pets

Pets are not allowed in College rooms or on College premises.

Non-College accommodation

If we are unable to provide you with accommodation you will need to find housing outside College. You should not arrive in Cambridge to arrange this until your application has been completely finalised by the College (and in the case of postgraduate students, the Board of Graduate Studies). However, since demand for accommodation in Cambridge is high, we suggest that you do come to Cambridge as soon as your finalisation has been received, but not without first arranging some temporary accommodation for yourself. Short-term accommodation will NOT be available within the College whilst longer term accommodation outside of the College is being secured.

When seeking any form of accommodation (short or long term) outside of St Edmund's College, upon arrival in Cambridge, you should contact the Accommodation Service, Kellet Lodge, Tennis Court Road, Cambridge CB2 1QJ. Fax: 44 (0) 1223 338098 and e-mail: accommodation_service@admin.cam.ac.uk (You may contact the Service by letter, but please do not telephone them). You can register in advance for help via this service on-line at their web site.

Please note that, due to University statutes and ordinances, undergraduates and LLM students need to live within 3 miles of the College, and postgraduates need to live within 10 miles of the College.
