St Edmund's College, Cambridge

Mark C. Field, who is a Fellow of St Edmund's College and the University's Professor of Cell Biology and Parasitology, has been awarded the British Society for Parasitology's C.A. Wright medal in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field. The medal is named after Chris Wright, a former Director of the Experimental Taxonomy Unit at the Natural History Museum in London. It is awarded annually to a scientist in mid-career who, it is considered, will confirm their already outstanding achievements to become a truly distinguished future leader of their field. Mark's research focuses on the African trypanosome, Trypanosoma brucei, the cause of human sleeping sickness and nagana, a serious disease of cattle. Mark has pioneered efforts to exploit genomics resources to provide insights into trypanosome virulence mechanisms and basic cell biology.
