International academic success for St Edmund's students Two recent St Edmund's students have won prestigious awards to continue their academic careers in the United States of America after completing their degrees in Cambridge. Gemma Veitch who recently completed a PhD in Chemistry studying the synthesis of a naturally occurring insect repellent called azadirachtin. has been awarded both a Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Award and a Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 Research Fellowship to undertake post-doctoral studies at Harvard. Dan Anderson who graduated in July 2008 with a BA in theology has been awarded a Thouron scholarship at the University of Pennsylvania . The Thouron Award Scheme was founded by Sir John Thouron and the late Esther du Pont, Lady Thouron, of Unionville, Pennsylvania, USA, for the promotion of better understanding between the people of the United Kingdom and those of the United States of America. It is a graduate exchange program between British universities and the University of Pennsylvania, conceived to reinforce the "special relationship" between the U.S. and the U.K. Continuing students at St Edmund's have also been winning plaudits for their academic work. We are particularly pleased to congratulate Jingbo Wang who is studying for a PhD in Earth Sciences and at this summer's pre-eminent annual conference in her field, held in San Antonio, won the best student paper award from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. | ||||||||||||||||||
