Professor John Loughlin, Officier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques, BA (Hons), PhD (EUI, Florence), PhD (hc Umeå, Sweden), FRSA, FRHis AcSS, is a Fellow and Tutor of the College and an Affiliated Lecturer in the Department of Politics and International Studies and Acting Chair of the Von Hugel Institute since May where he is carrying out a research project on 'Catholic Social Teaching and the Big Society' which is funded by the Plater Trust . He was previously Professor of Politics in Cardiff University where he is now an Honorary Professor. He is also an Adjunct Professor in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Umeå in Sweden and Maître de Conférences at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. John has carried out extensive research and published widely on territorial politics in Europe and has acted as an advisor on these questions to the UK Government, the Welsh and Northern Irish Assemblies, the European Union, the Council of Europe and the United Nations. In recognition of his research on European politics and his contribution to the study of French language and culture in the United Kingdom, in 2010 the French Government appointed him an Officier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques, an order of chivalry instituted by Napoleon in 1808 and awarded for contributions to French higher education and culture. In 2009, the University of Umeå, Sweden, awarded him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his research on European politics and territorial governance. John is Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, of the Royal Society of Arts and a Distinguished Academician of the UK's Academy of Social Sciences. In 2006, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Arts and Sciences.
