Dr Fiona Maine

University Lecturer at the Faculty of Education

Fiona Maine is a University Lecturer at the Faculty of Education. She started her career as a primary teacher in Wiltshire specialising in literacy and language. After completing a two-year assignment in Eritrea for VSO, she became a literacy consultant for Wiltshire Local Authority. As part of the School Improvement and Support department, she worked closely with head teachers and co-ordinators to plan ways to take literacy learning and teaching forward in their schools. From 2004-2012 she led the part-time Professional Masters Programme at Bath Spa University, working in partnership with schools and local authorities to create bespoke action research projects for Early Years, Primary and Secondary teachers. These projects focused on learning and teaching, typically centralising the importance of talk in the classroom.

Fiona is currently the co-ordinator for the Primary English PGCE Course. She also teaches Professional Studies and is a partnership and personal tutor for PGCE trainees. She supervises PhD students whose research topics include: supporting reading comprehension in KS3; exploring the potential of wordless picturebooks in the classroom; and digital picturebook reading pathways.
