About the Von Hügel Institute (VHI)

The Von Hügel Institute was founded in 1987 as a Roman Catholic research institute of St Edmund's College Cambridge, dedicated to the study of the relationship of Christianity and society. It is committed to working in a wide ecumenical context in regard to the appointment of staff and collaboration with persons and institutions of different Christian denominations, other faiths and all those who share a concern for a more just, inclusive and peaceable society and human flourishing.

The Rev Dr David Clark took over as Chair of the Von Hügel Institute on 1st October 2008 on the retirement of Professor David Bridges. To contact Dr Clark please email at dlc43@cam.ac.uk The Institute is responsible to the Master and Fellows of St Edmund's College.

We are a multi disciplinary research institute organised in three research centres. These are:-

All three centres share a focus on issues of social justice and social inclusion and an interest in methodologies which give voice to the underprivileged. The Institute's research is richly inter-disciplinary in character, running from the science of sustainable development through economics, sociology, political theory and ethnography to ethics, philosophy and theology.
