An engaging event on the Sun, space and colour perception by solar scientist, Dr Helen Mason, OBE, and visual artist and ESERO-UK Space Ambassador, Helen Schell. The two connected presentations will look into how we understand colour in space.

Dr Helen Mason will tell us all about light from the Sun focusing in particular on the solar spectrum. She will discuss observations of the Sun in the visible, UV and X-rays, starting from the study of sunspots by Galileo, through the work on colours by Sir Isaac Newton, right up to modern day observations of the Sun from the ground and space (SoHO, SDO and Hinode).

Helen Schell will discuss vision and visual perception in the altered gravity conditions of space in terms of her artworks and current project – The Human Spaceship. In 2016, ESA announced plans to build a village on the far side of the Moon, so what happens to human eyesight and colour perception if we live in the black, white and grey landscape of the Moon? Mars is predominantly orange and red, how will this effect human space exploration in terms of colonisation? Living on the International Space Station has shown that some astronauts have serious problems with their eyesight in altered gravity, which can be permanent. How we see and understand colour is determined by our earthly habitat, what happens when we leave it?

A great opportunity to discover something you didn't know about colour and some curious facts about colouring-in space.

The event is promoted by the e-Luminate Cambridge Festival which will launch on the 9th February 2018 and it will be themed on 'colour'. For more information about the upcoming edition of e-Luminate Cambridge visit www.eluminatecambridge.co.uk
