Undergraduate Study

BA Music

Music students at St Edmund’s have the opportunity to involve themselves at the heart of the College. The Chapel Choir provides music for the regular schedule of Masses in the College Chapel, while a secular choir explores a broad repertoire. St Edmund’s is fortunate to have a strong Music Society, which facilitates music making for Music students and non-Music students with an interest in performance. The College is also a member of the Orchestra on the Hill, which draws together instrumentalists from Churchill, Fitzwilliam, Murray Edwards, Magdalene, Girton, Robinson, St Edmund's and Lucy Cavendish Colleges for regular orchestral rehearsal and concerts.

Musical performance is fostered at St Edmund’s by the provision of College Instrumental Awards (currently valued at £50 with a further £250 for music lessons), which are awarded after annual auditions. St Edmund’s students can also apply to the intercollegiate Instrumental Awards for Chamber Music scheme.

Course Overview

St Edmund’s College offers a unique opportunity to study Music in a vibrant, international community.

Undergraduates enjoy both one-to-one or small-group supervisions organised by the College and lectures and seminars provided by the world-class Faculty of Music. The Cambridge Music Tripos is a wide-ranging course that provides a firm grounding in harmony, counterpoint, music history and analysis. There is also training in traditional practical techniques such as aural and keyboard skills. As the course progresses the element of choice increases, culminating in a final year in which no paper is compulsory with an option to offer a vocal or instrumental recital.

There is further information about the course on the University and Faculty webpages.
