About the Fellowship

The John Henry Newman Research Fellowship is a three-year, stipendiary postdoctoral position open to early-career scholars who have recently completed a PhD or have submitted a doctoral thesis in one of the following fields:

  • English
  • History
  • History of Art
  • Modern Languages
  • Philosophy
  • Theology

Candidates must propose a research project that engages with Roman Catholicism within one or more of these disciplines. Where candidates are of equal merit, preference will be given to those whose work engages directly with the life, thought, or influence of John Henry Newman.

Fellowship highlights

  • Join us for three years as a Junior Research Fellow
  • Become a St Edmund’s College Governing Body Fellow with dining and community benefits
  • Receive a £25,000 annual stipend, with the opportunity for free or subsidised accommodation
  • Contribute up to 80 hours of teaching or supervision each year, supporting the College’s academic life
  • Take a leading role in developing the annual John Henry Newman Lecture
  • Pursue your work in English, History, History of Art, Modern Languages, Philosophy, or Theology
  • Work flexibly, either remotely or alongside our partner institutions
