Dr Philip Gardner

Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education

Dr Phil Gardner BA MA DPhil MA is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education.  Following first and second degrees from UEA, he taught history at a Bristol comprehensive school for six years before returning to full-time study, receiving his doctorate from the University of Sussex.  Thereafter he undertook a further substantial period of school teaching before coming to Cambridge in 1990.   Within the Faculty he has taught on a wide range of courses over the years but now concentrates chiefly on doctoral teaching.  His specialisms are the history of education, and problems of theory and methodology in historical research.  His current research centres upon the relationship between education and empire in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.  He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2010.  Within College, he is Fellow Archivist.
