Greatest leadership lesson?

The greatest lesson I have learnt, as a leader, is that it is not always necessary to lead from the front and that leading by delegating is also good leadership. In fact those who you lead prefer that in a leader over one who tries to do it all and micro-manages. It is an issue of trust.

What values did you learn at Cambridge?

Cambridge underscored my belief that people are the same wherever they are from. As a result, I was able to make lifelong friends from all over the globe. I have also learnt that it is better to believe in oneself but have no great expectations of others or great disappointment will follow.

Eddies in a nutshell?

I call Eddies the little College on the hill. But what it loses in size it gains in heart. In my view St Edmund’s is the best College to study at in Cambridge. I cannot imagine studying anywhere else. I surely would have been most unhappy. St Edmund’s is like a large, warm, happy family and even though it has grown and physically expanded since I was there. Having been back to visit, I can see it has not lost its sense of community. Furthermore, Eddies has the best bops, ask anybody. My time in Eddies remains one of the happiest periods in my life.

What advice would you give someone thinking of applying to Cambridge?

Cambridge is what you make of it. There are endless opportunities to get involved, meet lifelong friends. To really immerse yourself in the community. You are at one of the premier institutions of higher learning in the world and those doors are all available for you once you step foot in here. Pursue those opportunities.

Who particularly inspired you during your time at St Edmund’s College?

I could not have asked for a better supervisor for my dissertation than Nina Ellis, a St Edmund’s College PhD candidate. She counselled me through moments of creative self-doubt and advised me in instances when the demands of the “real world” impinged on my studies. Most importantly, she believed in what I was trying to accomplish with my dissertation, bringing an infectious positivity to our supervisions.

How do you think your experience at Cambridge prepared you for the next stage of your professional or personal journey?

My goal now is the same as it was when I entered Cambridge: to write the book that only I can write. My time here gave me the confidence to pursue that goal. I’ve left university with an in-progress manuscript and a network of writers, friends, and mentors with whom I’m in regular contact. But most of all, I have a clearer sense of what my story means.

What motivated you to choose your field of study?

Motivated by Georgia’s pressing geopolitical challenges, I embarked on Political and International Studies to actively contribute to democratic reforms and European integration. I aim to propel Georgia towards a safer path for EU integration, advocating for political and economic reforms, and ensuring the fundamental principles of democracy and human rights are upheld.

How has attending St Edmund’s College enabled you to thrive?

Attending St Edmund’s College has facilitated the formation of meaningful and lasting friendships. My earliest connections in Cambridge were made here, offering invaluable support and camaraderie.

What advice would you give prospective students thinking of choosing St Edmund’s College?

I advise taking ample time with the application process and thoroughly researching what the college has to offer to ensure it aligns with your expectations. St Edmund’s provides a cosy and welcoming environment, ideal for those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere. However, it’s essential not to exhaust yourself before arriving, as studying at the University of Cambridge is inherently challenging.
