The VHI produces and disseminates research across the broadest range of disciplines. We do this through our research seminars, projects and publications; via our themed lectures and our international conferences and workshops; and by promoting student interest and research.
The Institute is interested in working with academics in any discipline. Researchers typically come to the VHI to pursue high level academic research, or equivalent projects connected with our mission statement. If you might be interested in working with us, please contact us.
Current Research Areas
The VHI is dedicated to academic innovation and impact in the contemporary world. We promote academic work of the highest quality drawing on the richness of Catholic social thought and the wider Catholic intellectual tradition, to contribute to the common good via interdisciplinary exploration of pressing global challenges.
Our current work falls under the following research areas:
- AI, technology and what it means to be human
- Migration, belonging, and global responsibility
- Sustainability, ecology and intergenerational justice
- Hope, agency, purpose and the common good
Through impactful research initiatives and collaborations in synergy with the rest of St Edmund’s College, the VHI seeks to offer distinctive intellectual frameworks through which enduring human questions can be explored in novel ways across disciplines, in dialogue with the wider academy and society.
These include:
- supporting the activities of the UNESCO Gandhi-Montessori-Luthuli Chair of Education for Peace and Transformative Solidarity
- contributing to the College’s launch of the John Henry Newman Research Fellowship in Catholic Studies
- publishing the Von Hügel Institute Working Papers series, a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue across the humanities, the arts and the science
Research Seminars
At the core of the VHI’s innovative interdisciplinary research are our regular Research Seminars, in which our members present and discuss their work. Rooted in our research associates’ leading work in their respective fields, the seminars are designed to generate new perspectives within and across disciplines, by providing a unique context for open-ended discussion and shared exploration.
