Students Matt Riddington and Fergus Hughes will be representing Cambridge University in this year’s Varsity Matches for our men’s rugby team on Saturday 8 March 2025 at the StoneX Stadium, home of the Saracens, in North London.

The Varsity Matches are the historic annual rugby clash between Oxford University Rugby Football Club (OURFC) and Cambridge University Rugby Union Football Club (CURUFC). The first men’s match was played in 1872 and the first women’s match was played in 1988, making Varsity one of the world’s longest running sporting fixtures.

Representing Cambridge or Oxford in a Varsity match earns players a ‘Blue’, the highest sporting achievement within the Universities. Each year, over 300 players of all genders compete for the right to play in a rugby Varsity match in hopes of taking home victory for their side.

Eddies student and captain of the university rugby club Fergus Hughes said,

“It is the honour of a lifetime for Matt and I to run out in Light Blue on the 8th March at Stonex. Having both grown up around the area we know not only how important Varsity Matches are but also how privileged we are to be taking part. Personally, as Captain, I would like to give Eddies a massive thank you for guiding me through my academic and co-curricular journey at Cambridge. While it may all come to and end on March 8th I have made memories that will last a lifetime and St Edmund’s have been crucial in helping me form them.”

The matches are a great day out for students, staff and alumni to come together to cheer on and celebrate your players. Gates will open at 11am, with a full day of entertainment for both children and adults planned around the two matches. KO is at 12noon for the women’s match and 3pm for the men’s match. The Olympic Bar will also remain open until 9pm this year.

Last year Cambridge were triumphant, taking home both wins! We’d love to have as many of you as possible there again cheering on our Light Blues against Oxford.
