Congratulations to St Edmund’s alumna, Professor Sarah Cleaveland OBE FRSE (Veterinary Medicine, 1983), on becoming the first researcher from the University of Glasgow to be elected to the US National Academy of Medicine (NAM).

Membership of the NAM recognises individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievements and commitment to service. As reported in Veterinary Record, Volume 177 (31 October, 2015), election to the academy is ‘considered one of the highest honours in the fields of health and medicine’.

Professor Cleaveland, who is Professor of Comparative Epidemiology at the University of Glasgow’s Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine, was elected in recognition of her work and research into zoonotic and livestock diseases in developing countries. During her career, Professor Cleaveland has pioneered new methods for monitoring and controlling diseases such as rabies and foot-and-mouth disease in East Africa.
