Lily Harter hosts a visit by HRH The Earl Of Wessex

2016-04-25

Lily Harter, Senior Captain of St Edmund’s College Boat Club, hosted a visit by HRH The Earl Of Wessex to the Cambridge University Real Tennis Club at the weekend. The sport, often described as a mixture between squash and quidditch, has been played in the City for over 600 years though probably in the street with hands rather than racquets! The last remaining courts in Burrell’s Walk is celebrating 150 years of play this year and this was where the Earl (then Prince Edward) learnt to play the game whilst a student at Jesus in the early 1980’s. The Club was delighted to welcome him back to meet members new and old, and to see a first class exhibition match between current and former champions.

Later, Lily hosted a champagne reception in The Master’s Lodge at Trinity for HRH, before the Club celebrated in style with dinner in The Great Hall. Amongst other distinguished guests attending was The Senior Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Duncan Maskell.
Real Tennis is enjoying a great resurgence in popularity and the Cambridge Varsity teams enjoyed comprehensive victories over Oxford this year! If you are interested in learning more about the game or arranging an introductory lesson, please get in touch with Lily at lh377@cam.ac.uk
