Dr Andrew Harter FREng FIET FBCS has been awarded a CBE in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours for notable and sustained contributions to engineering.
Dr Harter is the CEO of RealVNC, a company he founded in 2002 with Fellow Commoner Lily Bacon and others. Prior to that, Andy was the director of research and engineering at AT&T Laboratories Cambridge, where he led the development of a number of technologies that have had global impact. Andy has contributed to engineering at a national level through service at the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institution of Engineering and Technology, previously winning their most prestigious prizes including the MacRobert Award and the Faraday Medal. He will present the 2018 Turing Lectures.
“It is a tremendous honour to receive this award, which came as a great surprise,” said Dr Harter. “I am extremely proud to be part of the engineering profession and it is an enormous privilege and pleasure to have worked alongside so many talented and creative people in research, business and the national engineering bodies.”
Dr Harter also chairs Cambridge Network, the organisation which has for some twenty years provided services to thousands of high-skill businesses that make up the region’s enterprise economy.
Matthew Bullock, Master, commented – “This is a fantastic testament to Andy’s achievements and especially fitting in the year when the College has chosen to focus on its entrepreneurial strengths within the fellowship and student body”
