St Edmund's College, Cambridge

The main common room for members is the Combination Room (CR) situated on the ground floor of the Norfolk building. It has a TV, bar, and a pool table; a selection of newspapers and periodicals are also available. During the day coffee and tea is available free at specific times. The CR is the focus for many student activities. See the CR website for more information.

Bar

The bar is managed by the CR Bar Steward and operated voluntarily by members of the College on a rota system drawn up by the Bar Steward. The bar will normally be open between 9.30pm and midnight.

Television

There is a television viewing area with TV and video player in the Combination Room. The CR Video Officer will generally rent video films to be shown on Saturday and Sunday evenings during full term.

Why 'Combination Room'?

The OED says that a Combination Room is 'The name given in the University of Cambridge to the college parlour where the fellows meet after dinner, elsewhere called Common-room.' As pointed out on the Queens' College website, in Cambridge you don't ask 'Why', but 'Since when'; the first reference the OED provides to the term 'Combination-room' is from the accounts of Trinity College in 1650-1, and the term has been used since.
