St Edmund’s College, Cambridge is delighted to announce a partnership with St Joseph’s Institution Philanthropic Fund for the Lasallian Mission Ltd (SJIF). From October 2022, SJIF will fund and the College will be offering a series of scholarships for students from St Joseph’s Institution (SJI) and St Joseph’s Institution International (SJII), in Singapore, to support them throughout the duration of their undergraduate studies. The SJI Philanthropic Fund aspires to continue its cherished history of affording Josephians, from a broad array of backgrounds, the opportunity of a Cambridge education.

SJIF, a registered charity in Singapore and an Institution of Public Character (IPC) was founded in 2010 with various charitable objectives related or connected to education and students, as well as to provide a platform for students, alumni, teachers, volunteers and supporters to carry out educational, outreach and service projects in Singapore. It is affiliated with the Brothers of the Christian Schools (or De La Salle brothers), a Roman Catholic religious teaching order founded by St John Baptist  de La Salle, Patron Saint of Christian Teachers.

SJIF aspires to enable students who have received the time-tested Catholic and Lasallian education the opportunity to grow further, irrespective of their background. The core Lasallian  values of Faith, Service and Community underpin the mission-driven, values-centred education which has been delivered in classrooms since 1852.  It is these unique set of values that the SJI Philanthropic Fund seeks to uphold  and strives to propagate by supporting exceptional students, and empowering them to become men and women for others.

“St Edmund’s College has a strong tradition as a destination for students from Singapore, when they come to Cambridge. Our mature undergraduate students are all over the age of 21, and therefore naturally appeal to Singaporean students who come to university after completing their national service at the same age, but the vibrant, diverse, international community of scholars and Fellows provides a home from home for students coming to study from overseas” said the Master of St Edmund’s, Catherine Arnold OBE.

The Chairman of SJIF, Mr Philip Yeo said: “The inception of the St Edmund’s Scholarship confirms both the strength and conviction of a Lasallian education. It is gratifying to see the intergenerational support amongst Josephians and the Catholic community at large manifest in a prestigious and substantial scholarship. I am optimistic that St Edmund’s will become a preferred destination for tertiary education of many future Lasallian leaders”.
