St Edmund’s College to Co-Host UNESCO REDS3 Event on Community, Care and Peacebuilding.

St Edmund’s College will co-host the upcoming UNESCO Chair REDS3 in-person event, “Communities as Custodians of Care”, on Tuesday 21 October from 9:00 to 11:00am (UK time) in the Garden Room, followed by a reflective workshop from 1:00 to 3:00pm led by Professor Alain Tschudin.

The event will feature distinguished speakers, including:

  • Professor Dorcas Ettang, UNESCO Co-Chair on Education for Peace and Acting Director of the International Centre of Nonviolence at Durban University of Technology
  • Dr Nqobile Msomi, Director of Wellbeing at St Edmund’s College

Focusing on how communities can serve as custodians of care, peace, and wellbeing, the dialogue brings a global and local lens to critical issues including violence prevention, gender-based violence (GBV), and psychological inclusion in higher education.

Professor Ettang will explore how communities can play a central role in fostering safer spaces, especially for vulnerable groups. Drawing from global examples of community-based responses, her talk will examine both challenges and opportunities in building peaceful societies from the ground up.

Dr Msomi will reflect on how community psychology can foster a greater sense of belonging and collective wellbeing in university settings, particularly among diverse graduate student populations in South Africa and the UK.

The afternoon session, led by Professor Tschudin, will offer participants a forward-looking reflective workshop to explore the transformative potential of solidarity and care in shaping peaceful futures.

This timely event underscores the critical role of communities in addressing complex social challenges and building inclusive, supportive environments across educational and societal contexts.
