On Friday 10 October, St Edmund’s College hosted a powerful evening celebrating Black History Month and World Mental Health Day, exploring the links between sport, mental wellbeing and the future of Black excellence.

The event, titled “Sport, Mental Health and the Future of Black Excellence,” was introduced by Professor Chris Young, Master of St Edmund’s, who reaffirmed the College’s commitment to inclusion and wellbeing. It was organised by Reverend Dr Alisha Lola Jones, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Music, whose research and ministry bridge faith, performance, and social justice.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Genius for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Sport Award to Delroy Corinaldi, co-founder of the Black Footballers’ Partnership. In his address, Mr Corinaldi spoke of his journey from Wolverhampton to Cambridge and the importance of community, data and advocacy in tackling inequalities within football.

A panel discussion followed, featuring Dr Jones, Rev Calvin Taylor Skinner, Attorney Joe Briggs, and Mr Corinaldi, chaired by Dr Nqobile Msomi, Director of Student Wellbeing. The speakers reflected on how faith, justice, and community support are central to sustaining mental health and excellence within sport and beyond. Dr Msomi emphasised that, “mental health and wellbeing are inextricably linked to community,” echoing the College’s holistic approach to student support.

The event concluded with a call to action: to create systems that not only celebrate Black excellence but also nurture the wellbeing, education and leadership of future generations.
