Our Journey from House to College
St Edmund’s College has been part of the University of Cambridge for 130 years, and this academic year marks two major milestones: 30 years as a full constituent College and 130 years since our founding.
Until 1871, Roman Catholics and other religious minorities were not allowed full membership of the University. In response, St Edmund’s House was founded in 1896 to provide a home for six Roman Catholic students seeking a place within Cambridge’s academic life.
A century later, in 1996, St Edmund’s became a full Cambridge College, the only College in Cambridge or Oxford with a post‑Reformation Roman Catholic foundation, opening a new chapter of academic ambition and international diversity.
Today, St Edmund’s is a diverse and welcoming community of nearly 1,000 members, shaped by openness, global perspectives, and intellectual independence.
