The Master of St Edmund’s College, Professor Chris Young, has been formally honoured with the Bavarian European Medal, one of the Free State of Bavaria’s highest distinctions for contributions to European cooperation and international engagement.
The medal recognises individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Bavaria’s role in Europe, strengthened the European ideal, and enhanced Bavaria’s international standing.
Eric Beißwenger, Bavaria’s Minister of European Affairs, presented the award on Tuesday, 8 September, in the Domed Hall of the Bavarian State Chancellery in Munich. In his address, Beißwenger emphasised the importance of civic leadership in shaping Europe.
Beißwenger expressed his congratulations to Professor Young, who received the medal in recognition of his leadership in establishing and running the Cambridge–LMU strategic partnership after Brexit, a major act of bridge‑building, as well as for his scholarly contributions, including his book on the Olympics, which helped place the city on the international stage.
For Professor Young, the award carries particular significance:
I am deeply moved to have received this honour, which is rarely given to non-Bavarians, and grateful to close colleagues Professor Thomas Ackermann in Munich and Ingrid Hobbis in Cambridge for their friendship and support over the years.
