St Edmund’s College is very sorry to announce that Dr Richard Laws, 11th Master of St Edmund’s College, died on Tuesday 7 October 2014, aged 88.

Dr Laws was Director of the British Antarctic Survey from 1973 – 1987. He was awarded the Bruce memorial prize for his work on the ecology of elephant seals and awarded the Polar Medal in 1975. Dr Laws was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1980 and was a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Dr Laws was Master of St Edmund’s College from 1985 – 1996. He was elected an Honorary Fellow from 1996 – 2014.

Dr Laws is pictured with Professor Paul Luzio, 13th Master and Professor Sir Brian Heap, 12th Master of St Edmund’s at a luncheon in the College earlier this year.

The funeral for Dr Richard Laws will take place on Tuesday 28 October at 2.15pm in the West Chapel of the Cambridge City Crematorium. Details of a Memorial Service will follow shortly.
