The Venerable Dr Alex Hughes, currently Archdeacon of Cambridge in the Diocese of Ely, has been appointed Bishop of Brixworth. He will be consecrated in July before taking up the role in the Diocese of Peterborough this autumn.

An alumnus of St Edmund’s, Dr Hughes was born in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, but grew up on the south coast of England.

He matriculated at the College in 1998, going on to complete an MPhil in Theology and Religious Studies. He continued his doctoral studies in Divinity at Girton College. His thesis explored “The gospel of divine action: Oliver Chase Quick and the quest for a Christocentric metaphysic”.

Dr Hughes serves as chair of the Diocesan Board of Education and is a trustee of the Diocese of Ely Multi‑Academy Trust. He also supports several local church schools.
