During Lent Term 2026, Bye-Fellow Dr Flavio Comim will lead an online reading group jointly organised with the VHI to discuss Thomas Scanlon’s What We Owe to Each Other.

In an era of deep division and injustice, Scanlon reminds us that the fundamental task of ethics is to establish fair rules for living together, grounded in principles that must be justifiable to all those affected.
In a climate where fellow citizens are often seen as “enemies to be defeated,” his work challenges us to move beyond tribal identities and appeals to raw power, urging us instead to take others’ objections seriously and impartially.
The VHI reading group has meet annually for the last 26 years and greatly looks forward to welcoming new members. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the online meetings have proven to be a fruitful and convenient arrangement for gathering participants near and far.
